Security

The physical protection of employees and assets presented cause for concern in the 2011 financial year, and security arrangements are constantly reviewed. Vanggatfontein was attacked by armed gangs on three occasions in the year under review. Fortunately, no employees or contractors were hurt in any of the incidents which all related to attempts to steal large quantities of diesel. Copper cable theft and thefts of smaller quantities of diesel siphoned from parked mining vehicles also occurred. Now that the mine has moved from a day shift only construction site to near 24-hour operations, security has improved.
